Belgium vignette

At the moment (August 2026), Belgium doesn't yet have a road vignette for passenger cars, so there's nothing you can order for it yet. Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels have, however, reached agreement on a joint digital vignette, which under the current plan is set to become mandatory from 1 May 2027. We'll keep you updated on the official plans on this page.

⚠️
Not yet final. The agreement between the three regions is politically settled, but its introduction still depends on parliamentary approval, an opinion from the Council of State, and approval from the European Commission for the accompanying road-tax reform. The dates, rates and conditions below may therefore still change.

The situation today (August 2026)

For an ordinary passenger car, there is currently no vignette and no toll required to drive in Belgium: not on the motorway, not on regional roads. Only trucks over 3.5 tonnes have long paid a distance-based charge via the Viapass system; that system will remain unchanged alongside the new passenger-car vignette. In short: if you're driving to or through Belgium today, there's nothing you need to arrange for this yet.

Timeline: what's planned?

Now · August 2026
No vignette needed

Passenger cars still drive entirely vignette-free in Belgium.

Expected 1 March 2027
Sales start

Under the current plan, sales of the digital vignette will start two months before the introduction date.

Expected 1 May 2027
Vignette mandatory

From this date, a valid digital vignette would become mandatory on the Flemish and Walloon main and motorway network.

Expected 1 July 2027
Grace period ends, fines apply

No fines would be issued in the first two months after introduction. After that, fines would start from around € 70, rising for repeat offences.

Expected rates not yet final

The amounts below are the rates published so far by the regions involved. They are not yet officially confirmed and may change, among other things by vehicle category (Euro emissions standard) and region.

Who would it apply to, and where?

The planned vignette would apply to vehicles with at least 4 wheels and a maximum weight of up to 3,500 kg, so cars, vans and motorhomes, both Belgian and foreign. It's intended for the Flemish and Walloon main and motorway network, not for local/municipal roads. Like the other vignettes we offer, it would work entirely digitally: no sticker, but a direct link to your licence plate, checked via roadside cameras.

Why isn't this certain yet?

A number of steps still need to happen before the vignette actually arrives:

  • The Flemish, Walloon and Brussels parliaments still need to approve the scheme, as does the accompanying road-tax reform.
  • The Council of State still needs to give its opinion.
  • The European Commission still needs to approve the accompanying road-tax reform.
  • Researchers at the Dutch-German institute ITEM pointed out in early August 2026 a possible legal risk: if Belgian motorists get the vignette cost back through a lower road tax, foreign drivers would in practice bear a larger share of the cost. That could count as indirect discrimination on the basis of nationality. The European Court of Justice struck down a comparable German scheme in 2019 for exactly this reason.
  • Wallonia and Brussels have not yet fully worked out the details of their own road-tax compensation.

In short: the intention is clear and the agreement between the three regions stands, but until all the steps above are completed, 1 May 2027 remains an expected date, not a guaranteed one.
