Italy Introduces EURO-5 Diesel Ban from October 2026

From October 2026, a EURO-5 diesel ban takes effect in four northern Italian regions. Travellers will need an environmental sticker or switch to cleaner vehicles.

Italy Introduces EURO-5 Diesel Ban from October 2026

Which regions are affected?

The diesel ban applies to the northern Italian regions of Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna. These areas are among Europe's most polluted regions and are therefore implementing stricter environmental measures. Cities and towns in these regions will become inaccessible to EURO-5 diesel vehicles from October 2026 onwards without additional permission.

What exactly is changing?

EURO-5 diesel cars will no longer be allowed to drive freely in cities and towns across these four regions. You have two options: either drive a EURO-6 or higher standard diesel vehicle, or purchase an environmental sticker that grants you access. This is similar to the low-emission zones found in German cities or French municipalities.

Who does this affect and when?

This ban applies to all owners and drivers of EURO-5 diesel vehicles who want to travel through Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, or Emilia-Romagna from October 2026 onwards. It therefore applies to both Italian residents and foreign tourists and camper travellers alike.

What should you do now?

Check your vehicle's EURO emission standard and plan your trip accordingly. If you drive a EURO-5 diesel, order an environmental sticker in time through a service like europevignettes.eu. This prevents fines of €100 or more and ensures you can travel through northern Italy without worry.
