e-dálniční známka · digital vignette

Czech Republic vignette

To use the Czech motorways (dálnice) and expressways (rychlostní silnice) you need a valid e-dálniční známka. Since 1 January 2021 it's been fully digital and linked directly to your licence plate, so there's no sticker on the windscreen anymore.

Prices & validity periods

Our price includes the service fee for immediate, digital linking to your licence plate in English, with no hidden costs at checkout.

Motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement in the Czech Republic. Motorcycles, regardless of the country of registration, do not need an e-dálniční známka to use the Czech dálnice and rychlostní silnice. The vignette requirement does apply to cars, motorhomes and other vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

Fully digital since 1 January 2021. The Czech Republic then permanently replaced the physical windscreen sticker with an electronic registration linked to the licence plate. You have nothing to stick on or carry with you. Checks happen automatically via roadside licence-plate recognition.

What if I don't have a valid vignette?

Checks on Czech motorways and expressways happen automatically via licence-plate recognition. Without a valid vignette (for vehicles where it's required) you risk a substantial fine, often many times the price of the vignette itself. Make sure your vignette is active before you enter the Czech dálnice or rychlostní silnice.

Which vehicles does this vignette cover?

This vignette covers motor vehicles with at least four wheels up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, such as cars, motorhomes and light commercial vehicles. Motorcycles are fully exempt from the vignette requirement in the Czech Republic and use the dálnice and rychlostní silnice free of charge. Trailers and caravans are exempt too, so you don't need to buy a separate vignette for them. If your vehicle is heavier than 3.5 tonnes, it's no longer covered by this vignette but falls under a separate, distance-based toll system for heavier traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Czech Republic vignette

Do I need to buy a vignette even if I'm only driving through the Czech Republic briefly or just once?+

Yes. As soon as you use the Czech dálnice or rychlostní silnice (motorways and expressways), even for a brief transit, a valid vignette is mandatory for vehicles with at least four wheels up to 3.5 tonnes. There is no exemption for a short or one-off trip.

What does it cost if I'm checked without a valid vignette?+

You risk a fine considerably higher than the vignette price itself; the exact amount can change. Checks are carried out automatically via roadside licence-plate recognition.

Does the vignette apply to all Czech roads, or only certain roads?+

The vignette requirement applies to motor vehicles with at least four wheels up to 3.5 tonnes on the motorway and expressway network (dálnice/silnice pro motorová vozidla). Ordinary roads that don't require a vignette are freely accessible.

What exactly is the e-dálniční známka?+

The e-dálniční známka is the Czech digital vignette, linked to your licence plate. There's no physical sticker anymore; checks are carried out entirely electronically via licence-plate recognition.

Since when has the Czech vignette been fully digital?+

The Czech Republic has used the electronic e-dálniční známka since 1 January 2021. Sales of the new digital vignettes already started on 1 December 2020, so the transition was seamless.

Is a motorcycle exempt from the vignette requirement in the Czech Republic?+

Yes. Motorcycles, as well as three-wheelers and trailers, are fully exempt from the vignette requirement in the Czech Republic: you use the motorway free of charge. The vignette requirement is limited to motor vehicles with at least four wheels.

Does my trailer or caravan need its own vignette?+

No. In the Czech Republic, trailers, like motorcycles, are fully exempt from the vignette requirement. So you don't need to buy a separate vignette for a trailer or caravan.

My motorhome or van is heavier than 3.5 tonnes — does this vignette still apply?+

No. This vignette covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. If your vehicle is heavier, it's no longer covered by the regular vignette but falls under a separate, distance-based toll system for heavier traffic.

Does my motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes pay the same rate as a car?+

Yes. In the Czech Republic, a motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes largely pays the same rate as a car, at the same validity periods.

Does the vignette requirement also apply to a van or light commercial vehicle?+

Yes, as long as the vehicle has at least four wheels and its gross vehicle weight doesn't exceed 3.5 tonnes, it falls under the same vignette requirement as a car.

Is the physical sticker still mandatory, or is the digital vignette enough?+

No, since 2021 the physical sticker in the Czech Republic has been replaced by the fully digital, licence-plate-linked system. Through EuropeVignettes.eu you always buy the official digital version; so you don't need to stick anything to your windscreen.

I'm renting a car in or via the Czech Republic — do I need to arrange a vignette myself?+

In practice, you as the driver are responsible for this yourself, unless the rental company explicitly arranges it for you. You usually only find out the exact licence plate once you pick up the keys — check it carefully and only order the vignette once you're sure it matches the rental car's registration document.

I drive a lease car — does my vignette stay valid after a licence plate change?+

No, a vignette is linked to one specific licence plate. If your lease car changes (and the licence plate with it), a vignette on the old plate isn't automatically valid for the new car. If you've recently had a change, always check that the plate on your vignette still matches your current car.

Can I use one vignette for multiple licence plates?+

No, a vignette is always linked to one specific licence plate. If you drive through the Czech Republic with several vehicles, each vehicle needs its own vignette.
