BGTOLL · digital e-vignette

Bulgaria vignette

To use the Bulgarian motorways as well as the rest of the national road network, you need a valid e-vignette. It's linked digitally to your licence plate via the BGTOLL system, so there's no sticker needed anymore.

Fully digital since 2019. Bulgaria replaced the physical sticker vignette with the BGTOLL e-vignette in January 2019. Your vignette is linked digitally to your licence plate immediately, so there's no more sticker on the windscreen.
🧭
Passing through on your way to Greece or Turkey? For many travellers, Bulgaria is a transit country on the route to south-eastern Europe. Even if you only drive through Bulgaria briefly, you need a valid e-vignette as soon as you use the motorway or the national road network. The 1-day vignette or 7-day vignette is perfectly sufficient for a short transit.

Valid on the entire national road network, not just motorways

An important difference from many other countries: the Bulgarian e-vignette applies not only to motorways (avtomagistrali), but to virtually the entire republican road network, including most first-, second- and third-class roads. So if you take an ordinary through-road instead of the motorway, you'll often still need a valid vignette in Bulgaria. If in doubt, check the current status of your route.

What if I don't have a valid vignette?

Checks are carried out via roadside ANPR cameras that automatically check licence plates against the BGTOLL database. Without a valid vignette you risk a fine that can run into several hundred euros, depending on the vehicle type. In many cases Bulgaria does offer the option of paying a reduced settlement amount on the same day instead of the full fine, so it's best to buy your vignette in advance.

Which vehicles does this vignette cover?

This vignette covers cars and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight. Motorcycles (single-track vehicles) are exempt from the vignette requirement in Bulgaria; it applies only to vehicles with at least four wheels. If your car or motorhome is heavier than 3.5 tonnes, it isn't covered by this vignette but falls under a separate, distance-based toll system for heavy traffic. A light trailer or caravan without its own licence plate is covered under the towing car's vignette; if your trailer does have its own licence plate, check whether it needs a separate registration.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about the Bulgaria vignette

Do I need to buy a vignette even if I'm only driving through Bulgaria briefly or just once, for example on the way to Greece or Turkey?+

Yes. For many travellers, Bulgaria is a transit country on the route to south-eastern Europe. As soon as you use the motorway or the national road network, even for a brief transit, a valid e-vignette is mandatory. There is no exemption for a short or one-off trip.

What does it cost if I'm checked without a valid vignette?+

Checks are carried out via roadside ANPR cameras that automatically check licence plates against the BGTOLL database. Without a valid vignette you risk a fine that can run into several hundred euros, depending on the vehicle type. In many cases Bulgaria does offer the option of paying a reduced settlement amount on the same day instead of the full fine.

Does the vignette apply to all Bulgarian roads, or just the motorway?+

No, not just the motorway. The Bulgarian e-vignette applies to the national network of motorways (avtomagistrali) as well as most first-, second- and third-class roads of the republican road network. So if you take an ordinary through-road instead of the motorway, you'll often still need a valid vignette in Bulgaria.

My motorhome or van is heavier than 3.5 tonnes — does this vignette still apply?+

No. This vignette covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, just as in the other 8 countries on this site. If your vehicle is heavier, it isn't covered by this vignette but falls under a separate, distance-based toll system for heavy traffic.

Do I need a vignette for my motorcycle too?+

No. Motorcycles (single-track vehicles) are exempt from the vignette requirement in Bulgaria; it only applies to vehicles with at least four wheels there.

What exactly is BGTOLL?+

BGTOLL is the Bulgarian electronic toll and vignette system, which manages the digital e-vignette. Your vignette is linked to your licence plate and checked via licence-plate recognition.

Is the physical sticker vignette still valid, or do I now need to buy digitally?+

Since 1 January 2019, Bulgaria fully replaced the physical sticker vignette with the digital e-vignette via the BGTOLL system. So you don't need to stick anything to your windscreen; your vignette is linked digitally to your licence plate and checked via licence-plate recognition.

Are there stretches with a separate toll besides the vignette?+

Not for most routes, but a few individual stretches, such as certain tunnels, may carry an additional toll on top of the regular vignette. If you're taking an unusual or mountainous route, check in advance whether this applies to your journey.

Does my Bulgarian vignette cover me if I continue on to Turkey?+

No. Turkey uses a completely different system (HGS), based on an electronic chip rather than a vignette. For Turkey you need a separate HGS balance; your Bulgarian vignette isn't valid there.

Does my Bulgarian vignette cover me if I continue on to Greece?+

No. Greece doesn't have a vignette system, but toll booths where you pay per stretch, in cash or by card. So your Bulgarian vignette is neither needed nor valid in Greece.

Which validity periods can I choose, and what's the shortest?+

You can choose from a 1-day vignette, 7-day vignette, 30-day vignette, 90-day vignette or annual vignette. The 1-day vignette is the shortest and cheapest option and is active immediately, which is handy if you book shortly beforehand or cross the border spontaneously.

Does a motorhome pay the same as a car?+

Almost. For most validity periods, a motorhome in Bulgaria pays the same rate as a car; only for the shortest, 1-day vignette is there a small price difference.

Does my trailer or caravan need its own vignette?+

In Bulgaria, as in most other countries on this site, a light trailer or caravan without its own licence plate is covered under the towing car's vignette — no separate vignette is needed for it. If your trailer does have its own licence plate, check whether a separate registration is required for it.

I'm renting a car in Bulgaria — do I need to arrange a vignette myself?+

In practice, you as the driver are responsible for this yourself, unless the rental company explicitly arranges it for you. You usually only find out the exact licence plate once you pick up the keys — check it carefully and only order the vignette once you're sure it matches the rental car's registration document.

I drive a lease car — does my vignette stay valid after a licence plate change?+

No, a vignette is linked to one specific licence plate. If your lease car changes (and the licence plate with it), a vignette on the old plate isn't automatically valid for the new car.
