Driving without a valid vignette is almost always caught, either by roadside cameras or during a physical check. The fine that follows is, in every one of the 9 countries, considerably higher than the price of the vignette itself. Below you'll find out how checks work, roughly what you risk, and why ordering on time matters so much.
In all 9 countries, checks are largely automated, via ANPR cameras (automatic number plate recognition) mounted above or beside the motorway. Every passing license plate is photographed and instantly compared against the database of registered vignettes. If there's no valid registration, this is flagged for further handling. In most countries, additional random checks are also carried out by police or a separate enforcement service along the road, for example at border crossings or specific checkpoints.
Unlike a barrier toll gate, a digital vignette system has no stopping point: you won't notice the check at all while driving. That also means a missing vignette only becomes apparent afterwards, through a fine or, in some countries, an on-the-spot warning during a police check.
The exact amounts differ by country and can change over time. In every case, assume that driving without a vignette will cost you considerably more than buying the vignette in advance. For a number of countries, more concrete figures are known:
| Country | What you roughly risk |
|---|---|
| Austria | A replacement toll (Ersatzmaut) well above the vignette price for the relevant category, with an additional administrative fine if payment isn't made on time, which can add up considerably. |
| Switzerland | An on-the-spot fine of CHF 200, plus having to buy the vignette itself (CHF 40) anyway. |
| Slovenia | A fine starting at roughly € 300, sometimes with a discount for prompt payment, and considerably higher than in some neighbouring countries. |
| Hungary | If you enter the motorway without an e-matrica, a short grace period of roughly 60 minutes usually applies to still buy a vignette before a fine becomes final. Miss this window, and you risk a substantial fine that grows the longer payment is delayed. |
| Czechia | A fine considerably higher than the vignette price itself; the exact amount may change. |
| Slovakia | A fine that can add up; usually lower if paid on the spot than if the case is handled administratively. |
| Bulgaria | A fine that can run to several hundred euros, often with the option to pay a reduced compensation amount the same day. |
Amounts and procedures may change. This overview gives an indication based on the most recent information available. If in doubt, always assume the highest estimate, and buy your vignette in advance regardless.
Buying a vignette retroactively doesn't cover an earlier violation. In all 9 countries, the vignette must be valid before you enter the motorway. Buying one after a check doesn't prevent the fine for the trip you've already made; at most it prevents a follow-up fine for the rest of your journey.
For most vignettes this is simple: buy it before you set off, and you're covered. For a few validity periods it's more nuanced, because the statutory 14-day cooling-off period that applies to every online purchase within the EU also applies to vignettes.
The 18-day rule in Austria: because of this statutory cooling-off period, a 2-month or annual vignette for Austria only becomes valid 18 days after purchase. This applies to everyone who buys online, with us and with every other seller. The 1-day and 10-day vignettes are not subject to this and are active immediately. If you're planning a longer trip with a 2-month or annual vignette, buy it well in advance.
The same principle applies in other countries too: the shorter your validity period, the more likely it's active immediately after purchase, but always check this at the time of ordering. Especially for a planned trip, it's wise to arrange your vignette at least a few weeks ahead, so any waiting periods don't catch you out and you never risk crossing the border without a valid registration.
